Ayurveda: Remedy for Dandruff

Dandruff results in itching and flaking of the scalp. Occasionally, it can also affect the ears, eyebrows, and forehead. Though the exact reason is unknown, the primary cause of dandruff is thought to be yeast called Pityrosporum ovale. Over activity of oil glands is another possible cause.

Self-Help Guidelines

• Identify and avoid potential allergic foods. Limit intake of milk and other dairy products, sea foods and fatty foods. Reduce or eliminate animal proteins and eat whole grains, fresh vegetables, beans, and fruits. Avoid excess salt. Reduce tomatoes, citrus fruits and such acidic foods, and certain spices.

• Reduce your sugar intake. Diabetes can also cause dandruff. If you have diabetes, high sugar levels result in the dehydration of tissues as the body flushes out fluids in an attempt to rid itself of the sugar.

• Reduce or, if possible, eliminate all foods containing yeast, such as bread and baked foods, cheese, fermented foods, wine and alcoholic beverages.

• Personal hygiene and cleanliness is important. Shampoo the hair once or twice a week. Try lukewarm showers and rinse with cold water.

• Avoid alcohol-based styling products, as they tend to dry out the scalp. In addition avoid dyeing your hair.

• Brush your hair daily to improve blood circulation and remove dead cells and flakes to avoid any further spread, bend forward from the waist with the head down towards the ground, and brush from the nape of the neck towards the top of the head. If you have long hair, two strokes would be best to avoid stretching of the hair. After brushing, massage your scalp to stimulate the circulation, remove dirt and dandruff, as this will encourage hair growth. For a proper massage, spread your fingers fan-like and slip them through the hair. With your thumbs pressed behind ears, press down on scalp with fingertips. Now rotate your fingers so that they move the scalp over the bony structure of the head.

• Meditation or yoga will help relieve stress which exacerbates dandruff.

Ayurvedic Remedies

• Prepare an emulsion by mixing one part of sandalwood oil with three parts of fresh lemon juice in a glass bottle and apply on the scalp.

• Washing the hair with green gram powder or amla powder in curd is another useful prescription.

• Soak two tablespoonfuls of fenugreek seeds overnight in water. Grind the softened seeds into a fine paste and apply on the scalp. Then wash the hair with soap-nut solution or shikakai.

• Thoroughly rub a thick gel of aloe-vera leaves on the scalp; leave overnight; shampoo in the morning.

• Combine olive oil and ginger root and apply on your scalp before shampooing.

• Durdurpatraadi tailam as external medicament and Gandhaka rasaayan as internal medicine are usually prescribed to treat this condition.

• Brihat haridra khand in the dose of one teaspoonful mixed in a glass of milk twice daily, controls dandruff & improves color and complexion.

• Blood purifying liquids khadiraarista and saaribaadyaasavam taken twice daily (20 ml in same quantity of water) are also useful medicines.

If there is no improvement within four to six weeks, then consult an Ayurvedic physician, as it might be due to some problem such as psoriasis or ringworm.

Increase Memory Power

  • These theoretically important findings indicate that aerobic exercise training is effective at reversing hippocampal volume loss in late adulthood, which is accompanied by improved memory function.
  • Cognition is the scientific term for mental processes. It refers to information-processing abilities of humans, including perception, learning, remembering, judging, and problem-solving.

Pranic Healing: Mantra to Gain Wisdom

As we age, we may loose some brain power and recent memory but we gain wisdom becuase of our interaction with the world. But it is in the very nature of human beings to continue to ERR. Thus, many times we behave foolishly. As beautifully described by someone :-

As a rule, a man's a fool; When it's hot, he wants it cool; When it's cool, he wants it hot. Always wanting what is not.

Only a person who has the capacity to laugh over oneself and atone for one's own mistakes and foolish behaviour has the capacity to become wise. On such occasions :

Exhale with = I AM FOOLISH
Inhale with = LA-SHFAMMAN

When we exhale with 'I am Foolish' but actually we turn a wise man, fulfilling our mind with oxygen and pranic life energy with F, illuminating our mind with the kindled kundalini energy with L and SH which reaches with this mantra to the Crown Chakra with M to make us wise by making us aware of our right place in this universe.

Another Mantra to help us gain wisdom is by a very suggestive breathing mantra given below: -

Exhale with = IMPROVE-WISDOM
Inhale with = VAZAPRADAMMAN

Thus with the above breathing mantra we have stimulated the right brain with M and inter communion with total BRAIN with AN

Thus we can improve our brain power, memory capacity and gain wisdom using the above very potent and at the same time suggestive breathing mantras. However, I shall now go into the mechanism as to how to enhance memory capacity.

Pranic Healing: Mantra to Get Magnificent Memory

The exhale Mantra 'Magnificent' can bring about excellence in total brain/mind health, as it contains the total spectrum of brain/memory words like M, N, G, & T and thus helps us to improve memory, brain, eye-sight and sense endings of taste, smell and hearing etc. and then also establish inter-connections in the brain so as to ward off the onset of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Thus exhale with = MAGNIFICENT
Inhale with = SHFA-GANA-MANT

And the inhale Mantra also conveys it to be a magnificent song of health, because the word Shafa' in Urdu/Hindi language means - Health, the word 'GANA' means - song and this Mantra really helps to endow us health because

(i) The word 'SH' helps to kindle the divine Kundalini energy and moves it alongwith the breath upward to.

(ii) The Heart Chakra with the word 'F' which also helps to augment the breathing with the lungs to provide optimum oxygen/pranic life energy intake for circulation in the body.

(iii) The word  'N' is  the  seed word  for  BROW Chakra, strengthens the left brain and the eye-sight and stimulates the pituitary gland to improve the -immune system of our body. The word 'G' is also the seed word for smell sense endings in the brain, which it strengthens.

(iv) The word 'M' is the seed word for the Crown Chakra and it also stimulates the pineal gland in the brain. It helps to improve the right brain and the mind control.

(v) The word MAN helps to yoke us with the Infinite - the super-consciousness to draw in such pranic life energy as possible, which one can also store in the Brow Chakra.

(vi) The inhale Mantra ends at T\ the seed word for the Taste endings in the brain to improve our all tastes in life including pre-digestion of food in the mouth.

Thus, the breathing mantra Magnificent is indeed a very great health impartng Mantra for the body and for the brain/memory system, endowing Magnificence to our personality.
